WOMENS SHORTS : I'd also tried a pair called thePerformance Century Gel Short, but I found that the padding was a toothick and was concentrated too much in the rear. This actually made itawkward to sit on the seat correctly. Too bad no one makes dedicatedunicycling shorts with the padding mostly in the center where we needit! I'd read a bunch of threads on this newsgroup before buying myshorts and learned that 1) shorts should fit snugly, not too tight ortoo loose, 2) they should be worn without underwear, and 3) you getwhat you pay for as far as quality. I took a bad sliding fall a whileback and my thigh under the shorts got all banged up, but the shortsshowed no signs of abuse. I recently bought some straight leggedlycra/fleece bike pants from Nashbar (also around $40-50) to wear overthem when it's cold. This particular pair is great because I can rideto work and wear them all day- they look like normal, well-madestretch pants, not at all like bike tights.
WOMENS SHORTS : man jeans..... i don't know i just use shorts all the time, includingsnow, but for regular riding any shorts are ok, but for tricksespically when your sanding up do tight shortsI really like Performance "Century Gel" shorts. You can get them foraround $40 on sale.Look for a pad that doesn't have any seems or stiching lines runningfront to back. These seem to be common in mens shorts and some of the moreexpensive ladies shorts. Not good for girlie unicyclists. Line ofstiching side to side near the front of the pad ( normally to introduce atoweling section at the front) is fine however. I have a selection of cheap pairs (20-30ukp each) from Halfords, Milletsand the LBS, branded MY Bike, Bonin and Ron Hill. Anne, where did youbuy the Nashbar pants that you mentioned. I could not find anythinglike you described on the Performance web site. Something I can wearat work is such a great idea.If anyone is handy and enthusiastic with a sewing machine (and/or on abudget), spandex cycling shorts are apparently easy and economical tomake (Note: this is second hand knowledge, as I can just barelyreattach a button). WOMENS SHORTS : I received a pair of padded lycra cyclingshorts as a gift from my mother. She had sewn them in very littletime with very little money from a purchased pattern, bringing theircost (labour not included) to around $10CAN or so. The seams arenicely placed and can be altered in future models if they prove to beproblematic. A double pad of scrap polar fleece was used as thewicking pad -- this was suggested as an alternative to buying an"official" crotch pad. So far, these shorts appear to perform equallyto similar shorts I have purchased for upwards of $50CAN. I can'tyet comment on how well the polar fleece pad holds up compared to themanufactured pad (I broke my ankle attempting to telemark, so I won'tbe cycling for a few months), but I anticipate that its life will beshorter. But hey, for ~$10 and a mother who is distracted from makingme poofy blouses, who cares? And the pad can likely be removed andreplaced with a new pad when it wears out. Last advantage: for anyonefinds it difficult to find cycling clothes that fit them well, acompetant sew-er could customize the shorts to accomodate "non-typical" body shapes for whom cycling clothes are not typicallymanufactured. WOMENS SHORTS : My wife is lokking for a light and comfortable saddle for her bike (sherides a road frame with syntace clip-ons) since her old one is neitherone nor the other. We`d be grateful for any tips and comments from youexperienced ladies out there.I am not a lady, but I train with several very fast ones. Two of them use the Avocet O2 Ladies' racing saddle, which has the plastic shell cut out under the nose. This saddle is as light as they come (210gm), while being very cush. It is, however, also one of the more expensive saddles out there (about $85US). They seem to think that it is worth the price.BTW, I also know of several male triathletes who also use the O2 ladies' saddle to help relieve the pressure while in the aerobars. I have the conventional model myself and love it.I had a lot of trouble finding a comfortable saddle. I found that"women's" saddles did nothing for me -except the too wide back pushed meonto a too short nose-NOT comfortable. I've finally settled on the VettaTT Trishock MTB saddle- It's fairly light (sorry, don't have the weight)& has some give. I have one on both my road bike and my mountain bike, ifthat tells you how much I like it.Sue WOMENS SHORTS : I've been riding a Vetta women's saddle for six years now and I'm verycomfortable in it. I think it cost around $25, when I got it, but mymemory isn't too clear.Women vary, riding styles vary, and there are now a number of companiesthat make women's saddles. Is there a bike shop near you that will lether try out a few different saddles? The problem, of course, is that atrip around the block won't tell you how the seat will feel after 50miles....If you can find one any more, the Selle Italia Lady Turbo is probably themost comfortable saddle I've ever ridden. I don't know if they're stillmaking them, however. And they may be a tad heavier than the newersaddles.Right now I have a Lady Turbo on my "second" bike, and a Selle San MarcoSquadra HDP (women's) on my racing machine. Both are excellent saddles. The Squadra is considerably lighter, and only slightly less comfy than theTurbo.Good luck! A comfortable saddle is tough to find, because you can neverreally be sure until you've ridden several miles on it, and how often willa shop allow you to test ride a dozen different saddles?
