WOMEN'S BOARD SHORTS : "40% OFF" Discontinued! [emphasis here] Levi's ™ 570 baggy-fit jeans, orig. $48, sale 28.79. Save on our entire stock of men's Levi's ™ jeans."Frankly, I don't know if this "570" model is the offending one. The photoshows a guy's butt with pants correctly fitted, but I'm thinking this is astart of a trend. Funny how some styles last for years and years. Baggy jeans and baseball capshave been with us since the early 1980s. Women's ankle-tight jeans startedwith Guess?™, also at least fifteen years ago.And then, change comes instamatically (an anthropological term which means theuniversal adoption of a cultural artifact over the course of only a fewmonths).I don't want to digress with too much technical jargon, but fashion is alwayschanging. Some changes are seasonal and short-lived, like little ripples in apond. As an example, capri pants are on their way out, like shoulder pads inthe 1980s. Clamdiggers are in (and they're cute), but probably only untilwinter. The more extreme the style, the shorter its life.

WOMEN'S BOARD SHORTS : Other changes become common for a few years, like the great big waves of themighty ocean. Women's stretch slacks, in basic black, introduced about twoyears ago, are likely to be with us for some time, to the delight of rear-viewvoyeurs. But men's stretch slacks are already passé---$5.99 at Old Navy ™.I'm generally closer to fashion victim than fashion cop (when it comesto "style" I have NONE, and invariably look idiotic when trying to befashionable, so I've given up and just try not to look tooridiculous), but fear not, Bob. I was in JC Penney today, perusing themen's clothing - DH is very hard on clothes! - and noticed a LOT ofmen's shorts that are actually shorts, not half-length pants. Verysporty-looking, but not too prepster. So either I was in DorkstoreDeluxe (always a possibility!) or the tide may be beginning to turn.I was also shopping for myself, some (I've inadvertently dropped agood bit of weight I didn't necessarily want to lose, from acomfortable 22 to a snug 16/loose 18, since my surgery - did thathappen to any other folks who had their gallbladders out?), and theselections for females are currently pretty appalling. I'm still of asize where I shop in the fatchick departments, where it's even worse. At thirty, I have the choice of looking 16 or 60, because there'sbasically nothing in between. On the one hand, I'm happy for theplus-sized teen girls who don't have to endure the polyesterdoubleknit pants (with the "crease" sewn down the front of the leg!)and tent blouses of my youth, but on the other, I'm not the least bitinterested in loud "mod print" capri pants (ALL the rage in NewEngland, in almost every store, far from "out") and skintight,spaghetti-strapped tank tops with kiss-prints appliqued in rhinestonesacross the tits. Ugh! Seven stores in one afternoon and I had to"settle" for an only-okay dress, but I needed a nice outfit that fitASAP (brother's wedding in two weeks). I certainly hope this is atrend that dies out _fast_ - I consider myself blessed to have missedout on these fashion horrors due to youth and poverty when they camearound the first time in the 1970s (nylon print, wrap-and-tie discodresses?! Couldn't those have died with Studio 54?), and I'm not goingto miss 'em when they disappear again.

WOMEN'S BOARD SHORTS : Marivery irritated that fashion designers are doing such awful thingsright when she needs clothes! If only mail order were more reliablesizing-wise...I've been bitching about this problem for about 8 years now, since I was21 and first needing clothes for job interviews. I could look likeTeeneyBopper or I could look like Grandma. There was NOTHING inbetween. So, I started buying the 5 pairs of cotton knit stretch pants and 10pairs of cotton dress slacks that have made up the basis of my wardrobe. Now, I'm 29 & needing to replace stuff that has finally worn out. Andthe problem is WORSE than it was 8 years ago. TeeneyBopper has morphedinto TeenWhore. Grandma has morphed into something I don't recognize asbeing from this planet. So far, in this little piece of hell in the back of beyond, I've managedto find one silk blouse that works. And it's from .... Squallmart.I don't know who to blame, but I want the fuck out of this town. I wantto live somewhere I can shop in semi-decent stores (JC Penney is havingtheir semi-annual "we're on the last gasp and maybe someone will buysomething THIS week" sale this week, in honor of Independence Day. It'sa sure bet nothing will fit or be appropriate). But it seems like theproblem isn't any better anywhere else.

WOMEN'S BOARD SHORTS : Yeah, and the places that used to be the standards for gettingreasonably priced, basic, functional clothes have succumbed toslavishly following the trends.I shop at Squallmart quite a bit, unfortunately. I'm very easy onclothes, thankfully, so even their cheaply made items do last me awhile, and they're a fairly reliable source for the basic items likethose knit stretch pants (love those things, no matter how much thefashion police rag on 'em), but the actual shopping there is a misery.I usually take earplugs with me and reward myself with a treat when Imanage to get out of there without losing my temper.'Tisn't much better here, I can tell you that much. I was in Penney'stoday, though, and did see quite a few things I liked - there was justa shortage of items in my size in the few things I really had a chanceto out, and DH was really getting antsy to get out of the maul.*hrmph* I might go back over tomorrow or Tuesday. It definitely wasn'tbetter even in Boston, unless you had basically unlimited money tospend on the fancy boo-TEEKs (intentionally spelled like that!).

WOMEN'S BOARD SHORTS : Thanks for your comments. And though you say otherwise, I rather think your newsize is just fine.My DW's problem is she is short--about 5'2", and she can never find a dressthat doesn't need to be hemmed. And the so-called petite departments only seemto offer "career" dresses, not the breezy summer frock I'd like to see herwear. And thanks for the JC Penny advice. I didn't know that shorter shorts on menlooked "dorky" until I read those comments. You have saved mefrom---shudder!---fashion embarrassment.Back to work in the yard (it's 100 degrees out here this afternoon!). But asyou are a gardener, I want you to know that I've planted some interesting stuffthis summer, including 2 species of bananas (which die back in frost butre-grow here in spring), colocasia elephant's ear, lots of cannas for tropicaleffects (but not those garish kinds), cestrum nocturnum and 2 gorgeous tropicalhibiscus (grown in pots), and in the herb department, some catnip, some monarda(bergamot, for Earl Grey tea), and the usual other stuff.
