I recommendblowing $150+ on bibs though, that was the key for me. I won't ridewithout'em now.There are MTB shorts that are baggy on the outside, with a stretchypadded lining. You can also buy padded underwear, then wear whateveryou want on the outside. I wear Andiamo brand underwear, and it's quitecomfortable on long rides.I'll second that. I wear it under light cotton athletic-type pants, oreven under jeans for short rides on my city bike. It's my understanding that such shorts are available from many manufacturers. I've had a pair of Singletrackmind Epic Evolution() shorts for a few yearsthat have a fairly light-weight tight-fitting interior with padding, and abaggy external layer. The padding isn't as comfortable as on my Giordana's, but I've used them quite contently for thousands of km's, and they are still in nice condition.
WALKING SHORTS : Try the Century Gel Shorts and a baggy jersey. I was your weight not toolonger ago and found the combo worked for me.The other option is MTB baggy style shorts, but I was not as comfortable inthem.Padded underwear. Or, if you want a thicker chamois, wear cycling shorts*as* underwear.There are also MTB shorts with sewn-un padded liners as you describe. I havea couple pairs from Zoic, and I like them, but wouldn't want to get caughtin the rain wearing them on a long ride, since the shell is cotton and wouldstay wet a long time. I frequently commute in them, however, since In apinch I can keep them on at work for an hour or two if I'm pressed for timein the morning.All things considered, though, regular lycra cycling shorts are veryversatile, since you can wear them under other things in all kinds ofweather.You can try regular bike shorts (Lycra) underneath your baggy runningor walking shorts. I wear the bike-weenie uniform most of the time,but if I'm riding to a social or family function I wear walking shortsover my bike shorts. That way I get the benefit of a good quality"chamois" pad.

When Iride in lycra shorts that's all there is.In hot weather it's hard to be a lightweight quick drying swim supporterunder loose fitting shorts. Just enough support to keep the equipmentfrom dangling where you don't want it.It isn't that hard. Most of us can at least pretend we're jocks, regardlessof weather 8-)Shortly after getting 'bent, I started wearing swim trunks. They'remade to get wet, dry quickly, are very comfortable and 'airy', comewith a mesh liner, are perfect for a dip in the lake on a hot ride,and are very inexpensive.I bought 5 pairs at Mervyns for $7. each a couple years ago in Augustwhen they were making room for the winter parka's. If you lookcarefully, you can get ones with velcro or even zip-up pockets.I have a drawer full of padded lycra from the upwr... err I mean'diamond frame' days that I rarely wear.
WALKING SHORTS : I'll second this recommendation. Swim trunks make great recumbent shorts forme, too. I have 5-6 pair, all under $10. (If they just had a zipper fly,they'd be better.) WhenI first started to dress in public, I was very new at it and broke too. No waycould I afford breast forms and a nice wig.So I started by dressing androgynously. Nylons with shorts was a look I hitupon early. It kind of hit me as an inspiration one day, that if I woreultrasheer nylons in my skin color with a men's shorts outfit, no one would beable to tell. And they couldn't.So I got bolder. I tried shades gradually darker and lighter than my skincolor. Interesting results--darker shades, no one said anything. Lightershades, I was read, rather crudely. So I gave up the lighter shades.
