VOLLEYBALL SHORTS : Harvey MacKay's book "Beware of the Naked Man who offers you his shirt" musthave been written about Eric Spector. After successfully bluffing KarolynKirby and Liz Masakayan, the lying little punk proceeded to use theircredibility to sign up a majority of the WPVA players. Spector confidant AngieKammer remained loyal to the end (remember her LA TIMES MAGAZINE quote "He hastrucks and everything. he's a good businessman, I can tell"). Eric must feelpretty good about himself being able to fool Angie Kammer!Spector lied all the way through. He had 5 different contracts floating aroundto the players. He didn't even know which player signed which contract. Hecompletely fabricated his 3rd party interference claim to cancel his Augustevent. The bottom line is that he thought the players weren't smart enough tocatch on. They did.ALL volleyball players should beware of any new promoter who targets and blamesothers for their own failures. Pay attention AVP PLAYERS! It could happen toyou.
VOLLEYBALL SHORTS : I'm telling ya.... We GOT to get Bill Gates in a pair of volleyball shorts andteach him to play. This is our best hope. The time is NOW, by the way.... I knowhe will come around to it since there is rally scoring....Of course, there is always Plan B. Next year the Y2K problem will rear its' uglyhead and somehow in the mass chaos, I end up being credited with all of Bill Gates'bank accounts. Volleyball will be on easy street baby..... Goodbye Refrigeratorcarriers.... hello unlimited v-ball action on the tube!!!I said that once on the VB mag web site and I got "booed."I would be interested to see if we would ever get the MICROSOFT/AVP Tour ?!Dear I really enjoyed your opinions about the SpectorSaga. I am so glad finally someone has taken the time to really understandand voice my position about Eric Spector. I loved the way my words andstatements, that were said over 6 months ago, were sliced and diced tosupport your rediculous campaign. Thanks for your support. Angie Kammer P.S.To the people that believe everything you hear, I hope you can sense mysarcasm. VOLLEYBALL SHORTS : Saw this in the L.A. Times today, Dec. 25, 1998, and thought I'd pass italong. The top rated cable sports program for Dec. 19 was the NCAA Women'sVolleyball Championship. It was second most-watched cable sports programfor the weekend after the L.A. Kings - Chicago Blackhawks game on Sunday. And it was very distant from the over-the-air sportcasts. The numbers were Rating Share12-20 Kings- Blackhawks 0.9 212-19 NCAA Women's Volleyball 0.8 212-19 Kings- St. Louis Blues 0.8 112-19 College BB Northridge at UCLA 0.8 112-20 Pro Football - Jaxvilee - Minn 0.5 212-19 College FB - Las Vegas Bowl 0.4 1........... and in the bottom spot12-19 College BB - Auburn - Navy 0.1 0The on-air events, 5 pro football games, 2 golf tournaments and 1 collegebasketball game, Illinois- Kansas, drew higher or at par. The Ill.-Kan.game was 0.9 rating and share=2. The Giants at Carlina lead at 13.9 and 35.Granted these are L.A. numbers and reflect their viewing (or non-viewing)habits. However, the viewership was very good relative to the other stuffwatched. So, why do we need to change the scoring system? VOLLEYBALL SHORTS : Also, the LA Times mentioned today that the NHL playoffs last season averaged a1.2 rating! And those were shown live, of course. That's not much better thanthe 0.8 rating of the Volleyball finals. Are you listening, ESPN?!H2O wrote in message ...Exactly. What is needed is for those who run this sport to SELL it to TVexecs and sponsors. When VB is given a chance it comes through on it's ownmerits as it is played today.I agree that the game is great and does not need radical ruleschanges. There are , however, many people (some who are on rsvoccasionally) who have tried to sell the sport to television and havehad a hard time of it. I don't think it is due to any lack of effort orability on their part.Based on what I've seen and read, there are a couple of problems.1) The vb community is heavily fragmented: Indoors, beach, doubles, fours, juniors, east/west, ... Whenever some one of the groups looksto have a glimmer of success in marketing, there is resentment amongthe others. I doubt this infighting (which always leaks out somehow)is attractive to potential sponsors and partners. VOLLEYBALL SHORTS : This is something that could be addressed within the community.2) TV sports is becoming less and less about the actual game beingplayed and more about the spectacle and side stories. It is gettingso that a game is not viable unless its participants have hard-luckcases that can be chronicled on a weekly basis. Football andbasketball coverage are approaching cartoons and video games; HankWilliams Jr. and his MNF antics, the abundant Transformer/robotgraphics, etc. This is not something that can be addressed within the community. I wholeheartedly agree that gutting the game today will not help twoor three years from now when the tv guys will want still more time forcommercials and fluff pieces,Apart from some of the vb high-rollers buying time on a satellitetransponder and running an all-volleyball-all-the-time channel, issue2) seems to be an insurmountable opportunity.Boy, if this isn't true.... Just watch the Super Bowl hype coming up.... Thissportwhich I dearly loved as a kid, played in high school and some in collegehas turnedinto a circus on the Pro level. They are more concerned on replaying the guydancingin the end zone after a score. Maybe that's what we need... after each point wehavethe women players jump into the stands or do a little dance.... No,no.... if wego torally scoring the celebrations could be too close together..... Losessomething....
