SPANDEX SHORTS : I played for 10 years in NYC. I guess I have a different perspective thanmany in this small town. But I also don't think any governing body shouldbe specifying uniforms to such a detailed level. Speaking globally, thereare many countries out there in which even standard shorts are consideredimmodest. I would hate to discourage countries with women's sports programsin their infancy from participated due to a misguided uniform policy.Sorry Joe, but you are way off-base. I am *not* a US native, and that doesnot give me any greater insight into why Acosta and cronies feel itnecessary to *mandate* bunhuggers. Whatever else is true, they don'tstrike me as having any clear advantages over other spandex-based designs.Other than cheesecake value. When you start marketing your sport on thatbasis, you play into the hands of people who tend to dismiss women'ssports as irrelevant and women themselves as relevant in one primarycontext...I don't have a problem with bunhuggers: I have a problem with a Fedrationthat would prescribe them as the only acceptable design on grounds thatare none too clear - unless of course they are, in which case this wholething is sort of revolting.

I do know that there is asimilar requirement in beach volleyball uniforms (men and women).Someone also asked if there were any other sports with such differences:Tennis; women wear skirts while men wear shorts. Field Hockey: womenwear kilts while men wear shorts.

I don't believe there is a Tour-wide rule, just sometournament-specific regulations. One other note; A high school girls cross country team from Florida wasdisqualified for wearing "bunhuggers" at their state meet.They wore themby choice. They were considered inappropriate and not allowed by therules.One sport wants to have them and one does not. It seems both sportsshould have a choice.Please excuse my lack of fashion sense, but what is a "bun hugger", Ihope it's not the type of shorts that all women's teams used to wear inthe 70's.My high school girls team has recently decided that they will all wearblack spandex shorts after wearing lose fitting athletic shorts foryears. They feel that they look messy in the old ones and the spandexshorts will be more comfortable and "tiddy." As well they havedeveloped the opionion that all "good" teams wear spandex after losingto a couple at such attired teams.
SPANDEX SHORTS : I have seen numerous runners wearing cotton shorts over their spandexshorts. Why?I think the theory is that the spandex is supportive (your muscles don'tjiggle around, thus taking up energy) but some people don't feel comfortablebeing covered only in spandex.(Oddly enough, the only guys I see wearing these seem like they'd look justfine in spandex. Maybe it's the "I am not gay" thing afterall.)I sometimes where spandex underneath for support of tweaked muscles. Whilethey are functional in this way, I think they look disgusting on anyone, noexceptions. I cover them.Bob,Do we only have sex with the lights out and the sheets pulled over our heads? Rhetorical. Quite frankly, I look damn good in spandex and I find both men and women look great also. No offense Doug, but I'd much rather get stuck on a singletrack behind awoman in spandex than you or some other guy in spandex :-) It's the bestway I know to go out slow!You broke my heart. SPANDEX SHORTS : For me, it's pockets. On shorter runs, it's off with the shorts!-----------------I think somebody else might have answered this;not sure. But this is a fairly common practice,I do it myself... It's mostly men who do this.Alot of people are not "comfortable" wearingonly spandex for a variety of reasons. Somepeople think spandex or lycra bike shortsare just goofy looking and so they are embarrasedabout that... Other men find it embarrasingto wear lycra because... well... a ceartain bodypart leaves a conspicuous bulge in the tightpants which is quite obvious. Usually a long lengthT-shirt covers that bulge in the pants, but somepeople like to wear an extra pair of shorts (be ita bathing suit or cotton pants or cut-off sweatpantsover the lycra/spandex.)What I like to do is fold the legs of my spandexshorts up, and then slip my bathing suit (I'mtoo cheap to afford a real pair of running shorts)over the spandex.. Since I fold the spandex legsup, you can't see them...I can only speak for myself, but running in just spandex shorts would be likeshowing up at a pool party in a speedo. Wrong time, wrong place. I haveoccasionally done it when doing a back to back swim/run workouts, but I feltuncomfortable. Call me old fashioned, I guess.
