SHORTS FOR MEN : Has anyone seen the new 3/4 shorts for men hitting the stores? They arebasically capri pants for men. Does anyone think they will "take"? I am aman and am open to the idea.....they look very comfortable. I don't follow fashion closely in this regard, but I do see the newspaper advertisements and I do walk through the mall.Seems like I recall in the past (say 20 years ago), mens and womens short were both somewhat similar in length. At least they both ended somewhere above the knee. Just look at pictures of basketball players from that era. Today, womens shorts are to found in many lengths, but mens shorts (except certain athletic styles) just are all very long by comparison. Why did this happen?

"Well, women's clothes, in general, come in a far wider range of stylesthan men's do. There simply isn't a sufficient market for as muchvariety in men's fashions of any kind. That even includes things thathave heretofore been men's fashions exclusively. For example, there aremore styles and colors of flannel shirts and jeans for women than thereare now for men.As far as length and style of shorts is concerned, I think the trendtoward bagginess and longer lengths is so men don't have to worry abouthow their legs, and especially their thighs, look. Over the years, I'venoticed a trend toward more "body-consciousness" among women's fashions,and less and less among men's, other than "young men's". I supposethat's a good thing (if you're a man!) because, now that I've settlecomfortably into middle age, I've also noticed that most (not all) menlose any and all interest in taking care of themselves over time.
SHORTS FOR MEN : I seem to keep hearing that the population of the US is getting too heavy. It seems like each year the percentage of clinically overweight people is increasing. Since that statistic certainly includes men, I see how that might correlate.I think I've heard (but don't know if it's true) that the trend for the long baggy shorts look in basketball could be traced to the one particular professional player. I have never talked to a basketball player about it, so I don't know how much the cut of the uniforms affects the playing. It would seem that a shorter, less floppy style would hinder movement less, but I know things aren't always as them seem. When the players get tripped an fall down, maybe the extra cloth reduces injury from friction sliding on the floor.Skirt lengths have varied over the decades. Maybe shorts lengths have too, and perhaps eventually we will run full circle. Hmm, maybe we have already?

They falljust below the knee and they've got drawstrings on the cuffs and cargopockets on the sides of the thigh. They look good with Birkenstocks orHiking shoes and socks.If you got them from the GAP, then they're not so different ;) Just say no. Speaking as a woman who appreciates men's legs: these are agodawful idea. I didn't think anything could measure up to the horror oftank-tops worn with gold chains in the masculine fashion disastersweepstakes. Then, I saw young men in these pedal-pushers. To say that Idread the inevitable day when some overweight guy strolls by inclam-diggers.... Maybe some rules would help: if you're not in jail for life, losethe tank top. If you're not a gangster, lose the gold chains. If you'renot a sixteen year old rapper with a major recording label contract,lose the hip-hop.

I find that the material is always tootight around my groin, and suspect that it is because the towling insert tothe front of the chamois does not stretch.
