(Results from the Chinese Track Championships, 1997)(from Joe Henderson's Running Commentary newsletter) It's 1993 all over again. Same script, same stage, same director, newcast. The Chinese women are back after disappearing for most of the pastfour years. Competing again in their quadrennial National Games inShanghai in October, they ran wild. This new group of women is mostly 20or younger. Most are coached again by Ma Junren, of turtle-blood andworm-fungus fame. These runners set a world record in the 5000 and twoworld junior marks (for runners born in 1978 or later) in that event plusfour more junior bests in the 1500 and 10,000. They made a joke of theworld track lists. The Chinese story was improbable in 1993, and isagain, in too many ways: * The runners are too young. Record-setting runners everywhereelse in the world are in their mid-20s to early 30s. Fernanda Ribeiro ofPortugal was 26 when she set her now-retired 5000 mark. China's DongYanmei, who first broke that record (with 14:31.27) in her heat and set ajunior mark in the 10,000 (30:38.09), is as young as 17 -- or as old as20, according to some reports. Jiang Bo, 20, then lowered the worldrecord to 14:28.09 and Dong ran 14:29.82 in the final. * There are too many of them. World leaders from one country popup by ones and twos, not by herds. Before Shanghai the Chinese had norunners among the world's fastest 10 this year in any distance race. AfterShanghai they'd crowded almost everyone else out of the top 10 -- with thenine best 1500s, the four best 5000s and eight best 10,000s of 1997. * They race over too wide a range. Elsewhere you don't see thesame runner competing in the 1500 and marathon -- at least not in the samemonth. Yet Dong Yanmei ranged from sub-4:00 in the short race to sub-2:30in the long one. * They race too often. The Chinese seem to be exempt from therules of recovery between races that apply to other runners. Dong Yanmei, for instance, ran a 3:55 heat in the 1500, a 3:55 final, a 30:38 10,00, aworld-record 14:31 5000, a 14:29 behind Bo, and a 2:28 marathon -- allwithin 10 days. * They're too unknown. Runners don't suddenly rise from nowhere toworld leadership. So where did these Chinese come from? None wasworld-ranked last year (though Bo ran a 14:45 5000 two years ago), andnone of the leaders from Shanghai ran in this summer's WorldChampionships. China's best finish at Athens was Liu Jing's sixth in the5000. RUNNING COMMENTARY is published monthly. If you're like me you get into the 2 year cycle of 1) you'reoverweight and out of shape so you start jogging. 2) You start to get inshape after 1/2 a year or so, and thus add some speedwork. 3) As youstart to feel stronger you get more committed to speedwork, weeklydistance goals and race time goals. 4) You put more pressure on yourselfto not miss workouts, to run and race, to train and improve. This putsstress on wife and children family activities and on work obligations. Then, 5) running is no longer fun as the self-induced pressure to succeedand improve overshadows other important things in your life, so you 6)quit running for a year or more, gaining weight until you start over at1). I found solace in this RW article discussing four of the biggest trapsrunners face: 1) THE EXPECTATION TRAP. Having added "runner" to our self-image, wesometimes struggle to live up to the notion of "runner" that we create. Running performances can affect you as much as your job, relationships andother experiences that play into your sense of "self". Problems occurwhen expectations exceed abilities. You mope because you ran 30 mileslast week but should have run 40. You ran 21 for 5K but should have run20. Realize that you alone create the expectations. Recognize thatrunning goals are personally constructed goals, not absolute ideals. Lifewill go on, and your friends will still respect you even if you don't run5 days this week or breat 50 for 10K or complete a marathon this year. Behonest and accept "I am a 3:20 marathoner" instead of "I should be able torun 3:10". Mental stress is always self-induced. 2) THE COMPARISON TREADMILL. From the back of the pack to the front,we compare ourselves to better runners and assume that faster times willmake us happier. They won't and can't. Someone else is always faster, and worse, they're probably older and train less than you do. A person'shappiness may decline even as their wealth increases because happiness isbased on the comparison with others. Replace wealth with speed and youhave the runner's dilemma. The solution? Quit comparing. All runnersare not created equal. We do not start with the same genes or have thesame time and resources for training. We are all unique, which gives eachof us the chance to enjoy running for our own unique reasons. Have youever noticed that faster runners rarely seem satisfied with theirperformances, while many slower runners wear a perpetual grin on theirfaces? The challenge of accepting ourselves is a continual challenge. 3) THE PERFECTION MYTH. Runners believe someday we'll run the perfectrace on the perfect course on the perfect day following the perfecttraining season. THEN we'll run the way we always knew we could. Maybe. But we do not train or compete in laboratories under sealed domes, and whowould want to? To give up the perfection myth you must accept that thisday, with all its running impediments and distractions, may be as good asit gets. If you have the courage to accept this reality, you may learn toappreciate the everyday challenges that weave together the whole, richfabric of your running lives. 4) THE PHEIDIPPIDES SYNDROME. This speaks to the heroic side of oursport. Success in distance running relies on the ability to continuerunning long after the body begs you to stop. When we don't die at thefinish line, we later complain that we could have, and should have, givenmuch more. We feel miserable for being such wimps. To believe that youcould do more if you only pushed harder is yet another way to avoidaccepting reality. You may always wonder what you could accomplish at theouter limits, but you can only appreciate what you actually accomplish. Thus to avoid the roadblocks realize that they are self-made. When youtake running too seriously, you create expectations, accept myths and getimmersed in obsessions that defeat you. When you accept the reality ofthe world, and your running place in it, you begin to enjoy today'sexperiences rather than reach for a future that is always out of yourgrasp. You have the power to change your perspective, and when you do,the road opens up once again, inviting you out for another run. RUNNING SHORTS : IF YOU CHOOSE SEND IN AN ANSWER TO THIS RUNNING QUESTION OF THE MONTH: WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT SEX AND RUNNING? ARE YOU A STUDMUFFIN ONTHE ROADS WHICH MAKES YOU STUDLY IN BED? DOES RUNNING MAKE YOU TOO TIREDFOR SEX? DOES RUNNING HAVEI think sex while running would be hard because I think the stride mayimpede the act. Also I think a forefront striker would have a tough timewith a heel planter. I used to play some hockey and the coaches always saidthat running after sex was no good for you but that sex itself was ok. I'mnot sure if they meant you shouldn't have sex and then run or that the nitelife leading up to sex was no good. From: Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 00:01:44 -0500 (EST)Subject: Re: NOVEMBER 1997 RUNNING SHORTS E-ZINESex is funRunning is notDon't stop my subscription or I'll tell Mom.To: (Kevin Young)Subject: Re: NOVEMBER 1997 RUNNING SHORTS E-ZINEDate: Wed, 05 Nov 97 16:15:45 GMTFrom: (Riel Hauman)
