RUGBY SHORTS : Robin Brooke at Blindside~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~All Black lock will be paying at blindside flank for New ZealandMaoris in today's match against Waikato in Hamilton. Brookeoften played at No.8 earlier in his career and Maoris managerMattie Blackburn was confident of his ability to readjust tothe role of loose-forward.Brooke is the only World Cup player in the side, with variousothers forced out by injury, work commitments and the desireto have a bit of a break from the game. Mehrtens health check ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Andrew Mehrtens has denied that he was feeling unwell during the world cup final. This is seen as evidence that the All Black party wish to bury the incident once and for all, which is to be applauded. One hopes however that statements such as these won't be in their turn seized upon and used as an "I told you so" by South African supporters, but simply as an indication that the incident is now history, of the kind that should be forgotten by both sides.Sorry Daan, but I don't even remember what all this was about! :-)

Congrats to Paul for posting it. It struck me that it would be useful for posters to this newsgroup to get a similar posting from designated posters from each of the rugby playing countries on, say, a weekly basis. This posting would enable all of us to to get a quick thumbnail on what is going on in the world of rugby. SA could be handled by William Ramwell, Wales by Nigel, etc, etc. RUGBY SHORTS : A major social history event is taking place this weekend, friends. And youmay find it in your Sunday newspaper, but not in the news section. Our long national nightmare of gang-banger baggy Levis is nearly over. Youknow the type? The idiot kid who wears them usually buys a size 42 for his28-inch waist, letting them sag low to just above his private parts (the JoeBoxer underwear line made a killing on this look). The pant legs sag and dragon the sidewalk. Our subject wears loud, pimpish, pumped-up sneakers. He sports a huge, glossy,long-tailed, polyester basketball shirt from the "Big & Tall" section ofWal-Mart: red-and-white (if he is a Sureño), blue-and-white (if he is aNorteño), black-and-silver (if he's one of the Crips), or green-and-white ifhe's from the suburbs. Putting the baseball cap on backwards completes theensemble, lowering our friend's IQ another twenty-five points and making himgenerally unemployable for the whole summer break. So where's the good news? I found it in today's advertising pull-out sectionfor the Mervyn's department store chain (Mervyn's is more-or-less national, butyou may find similar chainstore ads in your 'hood). RUGBY SHORTS : "40% OFF" Discontinued! [emphasis here] Levi's ™ 570 baggy-fit jeans, orig. $48, sale 28.79. Save on our entire stock of men's Levi's ™ jeans."Frankly, I don't know if this "570" model is the offending one. The photoshows a guy's butt with pants correctly fitted, but I'm thinking this is astart of a trend. Funny how some styles last for years and years. Baggy jeans and baseball capshave been with us since the early 1980s. Women's ankle-tight jeans startedwith Guess?™, also at least fifteen years ago.And then, change comes instamatically (an anthropological term which means theuniversal adoption of a cultural artifact over the course of only a fewmonths).I don't want to digress with too much technical jargon, but fashion is alwayschanging. Some changes are seasonal and short-lived, like little ripples in apond. As an example, capri pants are on their way out, like shoulder pads inthe 1980s. Clamdiggers are in (and they're cute), but probably only untilwinter. The more extreme the style, the shorter its life. RUGBY SHORTS : Other changes become common for a few years, like the great big waves of themighty ocean. Women's stretch slacks, in basic black, introduced about twoyears ago, are likely to be with us for some time, to the delight of rear-viewvoyeurs. But men's stretch slacks are already passé---$5.99 at Old Navy ™.I'm generally closer to fashion victim than fashion cop (when it comesto "style" I have NONE, and invariably look idiotic when trying to befashionable, so I've given up and just try not to look tooridiculous), but fear not, Bob. I was in JC Penney today, perusing themen's clothing - DH is very hard on clothes! - and noticed a LOT ofmen's shorts that are actually shorts, not half-length pants. Verysporty-looking, but not too prepster. So either I was in DorkstoreDeluxe (always a possibility!) or the tide may be beginning to turn.I was also shopping for myself, some (I've inadvertently dropped agood bit of weight I didn't necessarily want to lose, from acomfortable 22 to a snug 16/loose 18, since my surgery - did thathappen to any other folks who had their gallbladders out?), and theselections for females are currently pretty appalling. I'm still of asize where I shop in the fatchick departments, where it's even worse. At thirty, I have the choice of looking 16 or 60, because there'sbasically nothing in between. On the one hand, I'm happy for theplus-sized teen girls who don't have to endure the polyesterdoubleknit pants (with the "crease" sewn down the front of the leg!)and tent blouses of my youth, but on the other, I'm not the least bitinterested in loud "mod print" capri pants (ALL the rage in NewEngland, in almost every store, far from "out") and skintight,spaghetti-strapped tank tops with kiss-prints appliqued in rhinestonesacross the tits. Ugh! Seven stores in one afternoon and I had to"settle" for an only-okay dress, but I needed a nice outfit that fitASAP (brother's wedding in two weeks). I certainly hope this is atrend that dies out _fast_ - I consider myself blessed to have missedout on these fashion horrors due to youth and poverty when they camearound the first time in the 1970s (nylon print, wrap-and-tie discodresses?! Couldn't those have died with Studio 54?), and I'm not goingto miss 'em when they disappear again.
