MENS SHORTS : " I have a question about clothing choices while riding- What do you wear underyour cycling shorts? The other people inmy spinning class say to go without, but that seems kind of gross. I'm thinking oneof the long short liners they sell down at the bike shop would be the way to go.Does anyone have any thoughts or other suggestions?"Au naturale is the only way to go in cycling shorts. Don't bother with undies. Theywill rub you raw no matter what the guys say (anyway, what do guys know aboutwomen's cycling shorts unless their wives or girlfriends ride?). For spin classes,which tend to be about an hour, there is no need for all of the creams the guys aresuggesting. I've been riding for 6 years, over 5000 miles a year and have never useda cream. It is personal, but for spin class, the duration is short enough that youwon't need a chamois cream to prevent chafing. A good pair of shorts should do.Invest in a good pair of shorts. Looks for ones that have a "baseball cut" and noseams down the center. The more panels a short has, the better they will fit.Inexpensive shorts tend to be 6 panel and more expensive shorts tend to be 8 panel.I even own a 10 panel pair from Cannondale. With cycling shorts, YES!, moreexpensive often means better. A $50 pair of shorts will be better than a $25 pair.$75 will get you an even nicer pair. Go ahead an spend the money to get acomfortable pair. If you are only going to do spin class and no cycling, $50-60 isprobably the upper end of what you need to spend on a pair of shorts.
MENS SHORTS : Several clothing companies make shortssspecfically for spinning. The chamois tendsto be a little smaller and a little thinner, and the shorts tend to be shorter thanyou would normally wear when cycling. I would NOT wear spinning shorts while ridingeither my road or mountain bike. The chamois is too thin, and you might get verysore. Look at , , and for some ideas on women's cycling shorts. I suggest youtry to buy your shorts from your local bike shop as you can try them on and find outwhich ones are more comfortable. These websites will give you a start, though. Don'tbuy your shorts at Mega-Sport R Us (tm), do yourself a favor and get them at thebike shop.Try to get a short that has wicking properties. It will transport the moisture awayfrom your skin to keep you drier and cooler during spin class. Never buy cottonshorts. I've used these w/ absolutelyno problems:I don't know how much _practical_ difference there is between mens andwomen's models (they change the chamois -- how much does it matter?). Through the years I've used both expensive and inexpensive shorts. ThePerformance mens shorts, that I linked here, are in any practical senseas good as anything I've ever purchased (and I've spent > $80 forshorts). The expensive stuff like Assos, IP, and Castelli, looksimpressive, but they're overpriced and the features supposedlyseparating them from the cheaper brands, are more marketing fluff thanvalue.
MENS SHORTS : I can't see paying more than $30 for a few strips of Lycra, elastic, anda "patch." It's just not that hard to make a good short for a "lowprice." If Cafe and others would lower their demand for those highpriced items, the prices of those things would fall for them (and theplain "store brand" stuff I am satisfied with would lower to undercutAssos et al). We'd all be richer and have more bike toys. Maybe others have more comfort problems than I do, and those seemingly(to me) worthless features actually do some good. I've been accused ofbeing insensitive.For what it's worth, those cheap Performance shorts and cheap Nashbarshorts always chafe and give me saddle sores when the temperature goes up.I've never had that problem with more expensive Louis Garneau or mycurrent favourite, Santini bibs. And they're more comfortable andpleasurable to ride in at all temperatures. MENS SHORTS : How do you guys feel about men's shorts (and for that matter much of men'sfashion in general)? In these summer months I have become somewhat sick ofthe usual long, baggy look, and have been looking for shorter mens shortswithout a lot of success. So far I've only been able to find a very limitedselection. International Male/Undergear seems to have the largest variety,Sauvage is mostly swimwear but they also make a few athletic shorts, and anoccational pair of running shorts or the like elsewhere. I guess I couldalways just re-hem some shorts myself. Personally, I'd wish guys trendswould go more in this direction, but I doubt mainstream america will readilyaccept that we men can look sexy too. What do women think about this? Do youlike the long/loose/baggy look of much of men's fashion or not? This bringsup further questions, such as, if men wear shorter shorts, should they startshaving their legs? It would certainly look nicer..I'm happy to say on the other hand that men's fashion is making some stridesforward, and that society is slowly accepting a broader definition of whatit means to be male. There is a much greater variety in the availability ofdiffering styles for mens shirts. Vibrant colors have become common andfitted shirts are mainstream.
