MATERNITY SHORTS : Short & elbow-length sleeves. Sleeveless and "cap" short-sleeves are not so good. The upper arms do tend to get flabby in later months, even if they weren't that way to start. Cotton, cotton, cotton. With notes as to hanging to dry ifnecessary, because of shrinkage. But I can't tell you how much maternity stuff typically comes in rayon or other synthetic fabrics. Here inSacramento, summers are HOT. We have a lot of days hovering around 95-105,from May through October. Other parts of the country may have lowertemperatures, but higher humidity-- just as bad. Peter Pan collars and whopping floral designs just aren't me.You can't go wrong with solids in general (more colors, please), andsimple cuts. The lack of pockets can be annoying, but when there AREpockets they may not hang very nicely. My sister would also recommend some cuts that stay away from thetop of the fundus. The pressure there drove her nuts after about the 6thmonth. Doesn't bother me quite as badly, but it can be annoying.
MATERNITY SHORTS : Is it a fashion faux-pas for women to wear aloha shirts? We're headingto Hawaii in 3 weeks and they look like just the thing for maternitywear. Am I relegated to muumuus, or is it ok for me to go aloha shirt crazy?Wear EXACTLY what pleases you. Aloha shirts are GREAT. If you can'tfind girl-kine, buy boy-kine. The girl ones aren't shaped, anyway. Only difference I can tell is the boy sleeves tend to be a little bitlonger. Such swank emporia as Wal-Mart, Kmart, and Costco all carrythem, as well as the department stores. There's nothing "wrong" with women wearing aloha shirts. But it shouldlook good on you. This applies to both men and women.Generally, women who do wear aloha shirts are older tourist or young(14-25?) local women. The first one usually gets the dorky Hilo Hattieversion and wears it to match her husband who has the same bright neontouristy look. The latter usually wears it very fashionable for casualparties and get-togethers. There are exceptions but that's the generalperspective that I see now.

Yes, they do carry the usual touristy type alohawear but I was pleasantly surprised to find an array of very acceptable,non-touristy, aloha attire. The store in Iwilei is quite large withsections for men, women and children and a big selection of gift andsouvenir items, including jewelry. Plus they had live music! The next timeI plan to shop there I will call ahead to ask what time the buses areexpected so I can plan accordingly!!!For those who are not budget conscious, Bailey's on Kapahulu sells antiquesilkies for hundreds (and hundreds!) of dollars! The shirts hanging fromthe ceiling (out of the way of dirty hands and shoplifters!) are the oldestand most expensive. Beautiful shirts. I purchased (a less expensive) onefrom Bailey's over 15 years ago. Several years ago I wore it over blacksilk pants to my 30th high school reunion in Calif. Got lotsa compliments!That shirt is now too fragile to wear so I'll have it framed.
MATERNITY SHORTS : "Fashion statements" can be made by women wearing men's shirts. They canbe worn, unbuttoned, over tank tops and shorts/slacks/skirts for a large,overshirt look. And, the corners of the shirt can be knotted, if desired.Or, the shirt can be buttoned part way down with the corners of the shirttied together. These ideas work best with the softer fabrics such as silkor rayon. Are there any other ideas from you ladies wearing the mensshirts? Don't worry about the material or print. Try iton. If you like it...go for it! If you are intent on staying away from"tourist" attire just ask a salesperson for help. If you shop outside ofWaikiki you should find a good selection of non-tourist aloha wear.I learned a good lesson from my daughter a few years ago. While she wasraised in Hawaii she now lives on the mainland and brought her boyfriendhome to visit. He had never been to Hawaii. During her 2nd day jet lag naphe struck out on his own, wandered in to an ABC Store in Waikiki and bought his first Aloha shirt!!! It was "the" most popular, gaudy, touristprint available (still is, aamof) and made out of that horribly tacky,slick, shiny material (sorry, don't know what to call it...acetate,maybe?). He proudly wore it to a very nice restaurant that night. I managedto keep my cool on the outside but my daughter knew that on the inside Iwas stifling a mighty large chortle!!! My daughter volunteered that atleast he bought the blue print and not the orange one! How right she was.It could've been worse and, after all, he was the one to wear it and...heloved it. That's all that truly mattered!
