JEAN SHORTS : Well, IMHO, go to Kmart, or Walmart or wherever you can find what I'm about todescribe, that APPEARS to have the best quality/price ratio, and look at theircotton blend pants. There are so many brands that I don't dare suggest one overthe other, since I am totally dependent upon what happens to be the best dealwhenever I shop for them. Moreover, ONLY YOU can decide what LOOKS goodenough for YOU to wear. But you should NOT select 100% cotton garments---regardless of what you've been told, you should always get a blend, say 90% cotton and maybe 10% polyester. The reason for this is that 100% cotton wearsout very quickly------incidentally, a lot of cotton clothes AND jeans are manufacturedin my state. Jeans are a good choice, IF you can stand their thickness. The otherproblem with jeans is that they have a tendency to shrink when washed. That'sthe reason why I choose cotton blends. Moreover, the polyester not only makesthe cotton last longer, but it also gives the fabric more body (trans. fewer wrinkles). You really can't tell about a particular pair of pants until you wash them severaltimes. Sometimes there is a lot of sizing put in the garment which makes it LOOKgood UNTIL it is washed when the sizing just washes right out leaving you withpants that look terrible. I've found that Kmart's own brands are pretty good, exceptfor some that just look too blue collar to suit me. JC Penny also always seemsto have moderately priced clothing with fairly high quality. ----That's my 2 cents worth, anyway.
JEAN SHORTS : (gentle snip)Depends on what you consider frugal.I have had bad luck with jeans that are cheaply made. They are not cutto my body type, and fall apart if you can stand wearing them.Best to try for upscale brands at consignment and thrift stores. Theylast twice as long for 1/2 the price of new cheapies and usually lookvery nice and feel even better.Certain brands seem to be made for different body types. Go to thehigh-priced places and have yourself measured and fitted. Then go tothrift shops. For the longest time I could not find jeans that fit. Ialways thought I needed to trim down. Turns out I am a 6 petite, not a7 misses...different cut and length, different age groups too.Mens go by length and inseam. You will need to experiment. All the bestCara I prefer 100% cotton because I can feel the difference. Polyesterfeels scratchy to me. I can walk you through the thrift store andpick out 100% cotton over polyester just by feeling the sleeves. So can my 6-year old daughter, who's always borrowing one of Mom's'soft' t-shirts for bedtime. I also find that cotton has less of atendency to pill, and the less time I spend de-pilling somethingthe more time-frugal for me. I find that there's cotton and then there's cotton. As with almostanything else, there are different grades of cotton and cottoncloth. Thin, cheap cotton doesn't wash well, but a higher threadcount, better quality cotton washes beautifully and even line driesalmost wrinkle-free. I still have good-quality sweatshirts, shirts, sweatpants, and cotton pants that I bought between 6-10years ago that are in great shape, and some lower quality ones thatare still wearable around the house though they're a little frayedaround the edges. One thing that has helped them last so long isthat they never go in the dryer. Even if it's just too darn coldto hang them on the line, I hang them on hangers all around thehouse. On the subject of long-lasting jeans, does anyone have a stylishsuggestion for patching? I have 4 pairs of perfectly good jeansthat all have holes in the right knee. JEAN SHORTS : Lumberjack look? Plaid flannel outside - denim inside. Use fusible webto attach and decorative stitch (or not) around the edge. Do bothknees or just inside on the other to be funky. However, if the wearingis from outside -ummmm- might not last very long.Punk look? Denim patch inside - a multitude of large safety pinsoutside. Ok. Skip that one.I just use old really worn out jeans to cut patches, use fusible webto adhere a patch inside and out, and decorative paint the outside formy kids. They get to choose what goes there. Make them into jean shorts, they never seem out of style and it seems alot easier than coming up with creative ways to patch the knees. If theyare otherwise in good condition, i.e. not threadbare around thewaistband, pockets, zippers, etc., you can shorten them to shorts lengthand hem them and have some decent jean shorts that won't fall apart inthe wash and get several more warm weather seasons out of them. It's analternative to off-the-rack jean shorts which are expensive and may haveto be shortened anyway if you happen to be short. I'd rather take a pairof "last year's" jeans and remodel them into shorts, that way I can makeshorts that fit me right. Off-the-rack jean shorts cost the same and Ihave to shorten them anyway, so I figure I might as well use "lastyear's" jeans to this with which are usually becoming a tad thin in theknees anyway. I'd love to buy "off-the-rack," but I'm so short that Ican't. I have to shorten everything anyway, it makes little differencebringing the hems up on a pair of pants or remodeling old jeans intoshorts. Besides, old "last year's" jeans are already soft and "broken in"to fit my shape so they are comfy and at work I have no dress codeconstraints, so anything goes as long as it is not too outrageous orinmodest. So I live in jean shorts during the warm weather months andonly break out the alternatives when I'm convinced the chilly days offall and winter are here to stay:! JEAN SHORTS : -------------------==== Posted via Deja News ====----------------------- Search, Read, Post to Usenet Shorts are cut differently than pants. Cut offs never look right foranything outside of washing the car. If you remodel clothing, you have to compensate for the "cut" of thegarment in the process. Most pants and shorts have a degree of taper inlegs and unless you compensate for that, certainly you'll end upwithsome- thing only useful for washing the car. If you're going to make apair of cut-offs from an old pair of jeans and you want the end result totake you beyond the car washing stage, then you have to compensate forthe cut of those old jeans. Taking a pair of scissors to an old pair ofjeans might yield cut-offs, but most likely the legs will differ inlength and they'll look crooked. If you don't hem them, a few tripsthrough wash may help as they unravel. If you take a pair of jeans andwant to convert them to shorts length, you have to leave the inseamlength a little longer than the outside seam length to compensate for thetaper. If you don't, than than the inseam side of the legs will tend to"scallop" towards the crotch and won't look quite right. It's what I call"drape compensation," take some old jeans or some thrift-store orsalvation army specials and experiment with them, it's a cheap way to seehow the "cut" of a garment works. JEAN SHORTS : -------------------==== Posted via Deja News ====----------------------- Search, Read, Post to UsenetAn other option is to take the old Levis to a place that buys old usedLevis for cash. Then use the money towards a pair of denim shorts. That's fine and dandy if I could wear "off the rack." Denim shorts "offthe rack" are way too long for me and too baggy besides. Doesn't makesense to me to shorten an expensive pair of jean shorts that cost as muchor more than ordinary jeans and besides shortening them, go through thetrouble of ripping out the flat-stiched seams to bring the garment in soit doesn't look like an ill-fitting pair of culottes. Instead, I can makea decent pair shorts out of an old pair of tapered-leg jeans that onlyrequire shortening and don't have to be gathered in. So better to have aconstant supply of "last years" jeans that I can remodel into shorts thanspend the extra time pegging the legs on those expensive off-the-rackjean shorts. After I hem them, you can hardly tell the difference betweenmy own handiwork and those $50 "pre-wash" or "stone-wash" jean shorts, but they fit right and my initial investment was much lower and I can afew more years of warm-weather service out of them.
