HIKING SHORTS : Unlike regular shorts, my red Speedos gives me a feeling of freedom, asthough I am at one with nature. They are so much less constricting. IfI were allowed to wear them to the office everday, I would. I don'tunderstand why my boss doesn't permit it. Of course, they have alwaysbeen a hit with the ladies. :)I've had better luck using the "boxer-brief" style syntheticundershorts or "compression shorts", underneath baggy nylon shorts.This eliminates chafing in certain personal areas. Some college andpro basketball players wear a similar style.Some workplace rules are so restrictive. Would you believe I have towear shoes when I'm at work, even though I do better on the computerwhen I'm barefoot. Recent nylons and cotton/synthetic mixes are far morecomfortable, lighter, pack smaller, dry quicker and are easier to wash.Or even just a modern ripstop cotton, if you really want cotton. Andcompared to 501s it shouldn't be too difficult to find something thatwill give you much better freedom of movement, less chafing potential,and still take a belt.
HIKING SHORTS : Indeed, cut-off 501's, (shortened to a 4 - 6" inseam) well-washedand softened can make for an inexpensive pair of hiking shorts,(look for them on sale) I also employ Levi 517's and Wrangler 13mwzjeans which I cut off at mid-knee, (again looking for them on sale)you get the jeans feature and durability. The mid-knee length ishandy for cooler weather outings where a jacket or flannel over-shirtwill tide you over. But for longer trips where variable weather islikely to be encountered and you're staying out over night, jeansget too sodden and don't readily dry out. So while jean shorts arefine for day trips, longer trips into changable weather requirepurpose built clothing, so light weight, quick-drying clothing thatcan be easily layered is important. So forget the jeans, and takeseveral pairs of nylon hiking shorts that dry fairly quick and usethem with leg warmers to keep the chill off in the AM, but youcan easily shed as it warms up towards midday.
HIKING SHORTS : I was wondering about hiking shorts. Personally, to usethem I grab them with both hands, put one leg in one hole,and the other in the other hole. Then I pull them up, zip-upand go for a walk. Does anyone care to engage in a longdiscussion as to whether there are better ways to do this?What are the pros and cons of different methods? You probably don't needone to put your shorts on. But some areas require a permit to takethem off.Finally, leave your dog out of your shorts, unless he is on a leash.
HIKING SHORTS : I have found that wearing shorts made from polyester acts as a beardeterrent. I have spent many years walking the National Parks andwild places of Aus, yet have never once come across a grizzly bear.This I attribute solely to my wearing of polyester shorts. It is welldocumented in the scientific press that household cats are capableof generating free electrons in the form of static electricity. Thesame applies to bears, except on a much larger scale. This has neverbeen tested directly due to the difficulty of finding a pane of glasslarge enough. Consider now the pair of polyester shorts. They too generate static charge. Since there is no signific difference between the charges (magnitude aside), and since likes repel (cf opposites attracting), the shorts will ensure that all bears in the vicinity will be immediately repelled.This also illustrates that marsuipials are free from static charge, and are therefore safe to use around sensitive ICs.Wrong. Polyester works as a deterrent not because of static electricity,but because the bears have good taste. Polyester leisure suits reallykeep 'em away.
HIKING SHORTS : Yes, bears are awful clothing snobs. You can tell by the way theywear their fur coats all summer. They have terrible personal groominghabits, though; rarely trimming their fingernails or brushing theirteeth. The few researchers who have survived close-range contact reportextremely bad breath.Overheard on the trail: Why are you wearing those awful shorts? It keeps the bears away. But there aren't any bears around here. See how well it works!You shouldn't experience shorts while hiking except in the followingsituations:1. Electrical storm. Avoid. Or know what to do and when to do it.2. Failure to put spare ham radio battery in an insulating place, such as a nylon ditty bag. This sort of short can fry your family jewels, so be careful with loose change.So you see, hiking shorts are really not much of a problem, uh, saywhat? Eh? Ohhh... "never mind".My ex-wife, and "John" and I were hiking in Fall Creek Falls in Tenn.John had brought his (very) small video-cam. As we were walking downthe trail to the falls, John, in the rear of the group, was heard toexclaim "something's burning!" followed a split second later by "It'sme!" At which point he starts to do this dance and pulls a home-brewbattery pack he was using for the cam-corder out of his pocket. Ithad shorted out on some change and had burned one of the wires. Luckily for him, nothing was injured ;-)
