And pretty opaque forsomething that seemed to be made of silk. I am studying Russian language and culture thisyear in college, and have always been a Russophile. I LOVEIvanova, as both a strong Russian character on B5, and observingthe dichotomy of Ivanova (which ironically enough, happens to bethe patronimic for 'son of Ivan') officer and the woman. (ex--hair in braid or hair down--it makes a difference). Although Ihave no problems with the idea of Ivanova in gym shorts, I agreewith a previous poster--She doesn't need to work out, and shedoes NOT sweat. :)
GYM SHORTS : I sincerely hope that your grade doesn't depend on your ability toretain and understand the information you've been presented concerningRussian language and culture. (A) the word is spelled "patronymic" in English orthography (and dictionaries.) "Ivanova" is *not* her patronymic. It's her "paterfamilias."(B) "Ivanova" means "FEMALE member of Ivan's family." That's why there's an "a" on the end.(C) Since it's the FAMILY name, not her middle name, which *would* be derived from her father's, what it probably implies is that there was a guy named Ivan way back in the family tree, after whom the rest of the family is now named. "Ivanova" doesn't mean "daughter of" unless the family name is only one generation old.(D) I'm still upset that Ivanova isn't wearing her mom's name as a mid-name matronymic. Even though it's not traditional, considering her background, it would have been a nice touch, prior to her reconciliation with her father.(E) Haven't we been all through the subject of "eemya ochestvo" and "paterfamilias" a *number* of times in this topic already?
GYM SHORTS : The eighth grade of Clive Staples Middle School had a very rigidsocial structure, and every student understood it. The boys rarelytalked to the girls, and the girls rarely talked to the boys.Among the boys, Peter was the kingmaker. If Peter said you were "in,"every boy wanted to be your friend; if Peter said you were "out," youwould be sitting alone at lunch. On the girls' side, it was Susan. The day after Susan cut her hair short, thirty girls went in forhaircuts.The focus of the social day was not recess, which was closelymonitored by teachers. It was the half hour that the kids spent inthe playground after school, waiting for the bus to arrive. This wasa much less supervised time. So one Friday, when Peter and Susanspent the entire half hour *together* behind the old Elm tree, theother kids did not play--they did not tell jokes--they did nothingexcept whisper and murmur about the only question that mattered. Whatcould Peter and Susan possibly be talking about? The two did not comeout of seclusion until just a few minutes before the bus arrived, andthen they would not say anything about their discussion. But Susanpulled aside one girl: a shy, skinny girl named Betsy, with long darkhair and freckles, who always seemed to be watching Susan longinglythrough her glasses.
GYM SHORTS : "Betsy," said Susan, "I need you to do a favor for me on Monday.""What's that?" Betsy tried to sound casual, but she was thrilled. Afavor for Susan was the ticket to a social position that Betsy hadonly dreamed of."I need you to wear a T-shirt and gym shorts. You know the kind, withthe elastic band?""It's October, Susan, it's getting cold for shorts, isn't it?" Susandidn't answer at all, and immediately Betsy regretted asking thequestion. Susan just walked away and got onto the school bus. OnMonday, Betsy arrived in gym shorts.Betsy felt painfully conspicuous all that day, with her skinny barelegs surrounded by the jeans and long skirts that all the otherstudents were wearing. Her slightly chilly legs kept tensing up, andthe feeling of being stared at made her feel more uncomfortable thanflattered. She fought the urge to cover her legs with a sweater,suspecting that Susan would not approve. Her sacrifice paid off whenshe was invited to sit at Susan's table at the lunch room. Betsy satin awe, not saying anything, but just listening to the conversation ofall the coolest, prettiest girls in the school. Inside her head, shewas saying a prayer: please don't let me blow this. Let me do thisright.
GYM SHORTS : As the kids gathered in the playground after school that afternoon,Peter gathered all the boys around him. He seemed to be explainingsomething to them in great detail that none of the girls could hear. The girls played and chatted in their usual way. When Susanapproached, Betsy didn't wait to be asked. "What can I do for you,Susan? Is there something else you would like me to wear tomorrow?""No," replied Susan, "But I do need something right now, and this isvery important. Go stand behind the Elm tree, where Peter and I wereon Friday. Just stand there. The rest of us will make sure noteachers come around to your side. When a boy shows up, ignorehim--don't talk, don't even move if you can help it. Just standthere.""OK, Susan. I won't mess it up, I promise." Betsy wondered if all ofSusan's friends had to undergo this barrage of strange requests. Butshe certainly wasn't going to argue a second time. She walked behindthe tree and waited. Very shortly, Peter walked behind the tree withher. Susan was suddenly terrified. Was he going to make fun of her? Play tricks on her? Was he going to...kiss her? Was that what thiswas all about?
