Personally, I'm sure that wearingbunhuggers would have distracted me from my running in high school--worrying that if I looked too good, guys would be drooling, and if Ididn't look good in them, people would be laughing. GIRLS SHORTS : Hi, my name is Emma and I'm 15. I live in Eire (Irish Republic).I really love cross country running and also the longer track events,especially 800m. I also play volleyball.Problem is, in my school and pretty much every school or club in Ireland, girlshave to play in just a top and briefs - we don't have the option of wearingshorts over the top.I *really* hate this! I feel sooooo exposed! Although the briefs are maybe alittle less skimpy than your average undies, and are in a thicker materially,basically they're just a pair of knickers. You can't wear anything elseunderneath, you have to keep your pubies in trim, and basically it's likerunning around in your underwear.I've asked my friends whether they feel as embarrassed as I do. One does, butmost either don't mind or say they really like the briefs and would hate towear shorts. They think it's not so ladylike or professional.I'm trying to find out what goes on in other countries. What do most girls wearfor running, volleyball etc in English schools? Do you have to wear briefs orshorts, or do you have a choice?

Also most of the girls don't see anythingwrong in it, which makes it difficult for me to get them to take my side intrying to get the rules changed so we can wear shorts.I've never heard of anything like this in any British schools (oranywhere else) I'd imagine the girls there all wear shorts. I'd alsoworry seriously about any teachers who insisted on this form of dressand their motives for doing so.

What did they do to persuade the school to let themdo this? Were all the girls anti having to wear briefs? One of the problems I'm havingis that most of my friends seem quite happy with them.

I think it's too revolutionary to expect an Irish schoolto let girls wear any kind of trousers/shorts, but since we already have gymskirts for netball it's possible they will go for this.It does not matter what school it was. There where lots of parents and pupils that thought it was unfair .Well, there are lots of reasons they give for preferring briefs to shorts. somesay they are more comfortable, or more professional (ie the top runners competein them) or easier to run in or more ladylike or sexier. I think the mainreason is they're more ladylike and they don't want to be seen as unladylikefor wanting to wear shorts.Actually although most girls in England seem to hate them, I posted on someAmerican boards and they seem to like them over there. A couple of girlsemailed me ideas for ways of overcoming my feeling of self consciousness whichI am going to try next time I run in them.I would like to get the rules changed but most of the girls want them to stayas they are.
