DOCKERS SHORTS : I feel lower than a snake today. My Mom informed me today that she is going tofile for divorce from my Dad soon. And that means this house and all the landthat goes with it is going to have to be sold. Its like a huge chunk of land weown...25 acres near a golf course. So I wont be able to live here anymore. Imvery close to this land...its been in my family for over a hundred years. Idont really care that my parents are splitting up, that is no surprise to meand frankly it is no big deal really. However I will miss this land.I figure my Dad will hold onto the other chunk of land we have with thefarmhouse that used to be my grandmother's. I figure that will be where he willmove to after the divorce. So at least I will still have some roots here and atleast a small bit of the land will be saved. But most of it, the 25 acres whereI live at least, is going to be gone and thats going to be hard on me mentally. I guess I could live with my Dad at my grandmother's old farmhouse if I wantedif I didnt want to move to Connecticut.
DOCKERS SHORTS : Things have been going downhill here for a while. Because Im disabled, I guessthe only thing for me to do will be able to move to Connecticut. I dont reallywant to do that, I like the hot weather down here. However thats probably goingto be my only option. First this land used to be farmed on by my grandparents and my Dad. Tobaccofarming and also they grew flowers on this land. We also had a big greenhousehere. Then they quit farming it and we built a house on it a long time ago. Wehave had a nice relaxing life here, its pretty cool when you can walk up yourlong driveway at night while smoking a cigar or drinking a beer and look up atthe stars and take a piss off your front porch and nobody can do a damn thingto you. Or burn your garbage in a ditch and not have to have garbage men pickup your garbage like most do...we live the old kind of life here...lots offreedom. In the summertime its very nice here, hot as hell but so relaxing. Its relaxingto walk around at night here, sit outside at night while I smoked a cigarwearing shorts and flip flops and talk politics with my Dad.
DOCKERS SHORTS : I second the motion for "relaxed fit" scout pants. I have a pair of green khaki Dockers shorts that have performed quite well in a "Class B" environment like summer camp. Most people can't tell the difference. Another bonus is that I can still wear size 34 Dockers, but alas my Scout pant waist size seems to be tracking my age (36 and counting).The cut is terrible, they are very expensive, and the kids won't wearthem for anything but Scout Meetings.As a result, in my troop (and in almost every troop I know in thearea) we don't ask the kids to purchase the Scouts Canada pants (whichare navy blue). We still require the full uniform, but accept any pair of clean navyblue pants (no Jeans of course). I personally use the pants from theFire Dept's uniform where I work.For the kids, we suggest they purchase navy blue workpants from alocal outlet. They are the right colour, complement the uniform quitesmartly and are about 1/3 cheaper than the Scouts Canada pants and area lot more comfy (specially for those Scouts and leaders who are alittle "rounder").

We are, for the most part, hardcore outdoorsfolk, and so we usually just bring a shirt to camporees so we can look presentable. Real trips, backpacking and the like, no chance. At meetings, we usually end up playing something active, like steal the bacon, so uniform is practical: shirt and jeans, take off the shirt for the game. and we've done fine this way for ages. nobody complains about the fit of the pants, coz no one wears them.just a though,channingIMNSHO, the uniform is an important part of the program. Perhaps the controversy seen in recent discussions here over a (yellow) Leader's shirt, a pair of official pants and other components of the uniform and the attitude that the uniform is not important are one of the reasons some Troops, Packs, Posts, etc. have a high attrition rate? Maybe if we set an example and educated our members as to the importance of the uniform, interest in Scouting would rebound and we'd see another surge in growth of the movememnt along with its value system? Just a thought...

While it may not always be pratical to wear full uniform at all times and for all activities, it is an important element in underlining the other developmental aspects of the movement.Uniform helps foster pride and identification with a world-wide organization. It also is a valuable aid towards fostering respect and some basic personal habits, such as neatness and cleanliness.Our Cubs wear full uniform to all regular meetings, and while enroute to and home from camps. For some informal occasions, such as fun days and parties, we only ask for neckerchief and woggle (these being perhaps the most standard elements of uniform within the international Scouting movement. Our young Cubs enjoy looking sharp and regard points lost during inspection as a problem to be corrected next time.I have seen Packs and Troops where uniform rules were slack and the behaviour of the group reflected the same attitude. BP believed that the reason behind a poorly functioning and dressed group of Scouts was a slack Scoutmaster and I tend to support his theory.
