CYCLING SHORTS : Dave & Denise Kother wrote:Some of the other posters are having some fun with you. Presumably they get a kick out of giving dodgy advice to someone who might not know any better. I wonder if they do this in real life, or only when protected by the anonymity of Usenet.Anyway, don't wear anything under your knicks unless you really do want the extra chafing to give you saddle sores.Add to that you want shorts with more "panels". A panel is a section ofcloth sewn in to the final design. Cheap shorts are made from as few as 4panels and don't fit very well. Another choice is the choice of padding andit is largely personal. My personal favorite is the Pearl Izumi Microsensor 3D Short. But remember, you pay for what you get and that short is pricey. The Ultrasensor might bea more reasonably priced option. Before you get your little panties in a wad, he closes the window before hefarts in my house.I doubt your derriere is as tough as Armstrong's! For my part, I have hadgreat success with the Century Shorts sold by Performance Bicycles. They really are designed for centuries! CYCLING SHORTS : Those are decent quality-especially for their price. I get Voler shortsthrough our team and they're very good shorts. You can buy Voler shortsonline at their website.I agree with Voler. I just bought them online and wouldn't trade them for anything. . Before buying these I bought some Pearl Izumi shorts and our team shorts were Louis Garneau. I wouldn't wear either of these unless I had absolutley nothing else left.Start with these. They work for me and don't cost nearly as much asthe big name brands. I have worn Pearl Izumi and Louis Garneau shortswhich, while comfortable, cost a lot more and did not wear nearly aswell as the Performance shorts. I did not find them much morecomfortable than the Performance shorts either.Padded shorts won't do much to keep you from going numb. Going numbon a long ride is preventable, though. The nose of your saddle may betoo high. I also find that riding out of the saddle a bit every fewmiles helps. CYCLING SHORTS : I never put any kind of lotion on the chamois and I never feel like I neededto. I think the lotion softens the skin so it may damage easier. My lotion recommendation was based on testimony of female racers that I haveknown. As I stated, everyone should decide what is best for them. By the way, I recall that Paul Kimmage, in his book, stated that he usedlotion for the Tour de France. You tell the other people in your little Spin class over at Ballys that theofficial consensus on RBR, the chief newsgroup to all pro cyclists worldwide andinter-galactic, is that you wear your bibs bareback. Now if you're a dirty girl, then just make sure you wash them after every ride(handwash, and line dry).If your friends in your little spin class still laugh at you, then tell them toshow up at the starting line of a bike race wearing their Hanes underneath theirKMart shorts and see how many laps they finish."Cafe de Colombia Latte" wrote in message... Define "dirty girl" CYCLING SHORTS : " I have a question about clothing choices while riding- What do you wear underyour cycling shorts? The other people inmy spinning class say to go without, but that seems kind of gross. I'm thinking oneof the long short liners they sell down at the bike shop would be the way to go.Does anyone have any thoughts or other suggestions?"Au naturale is the only way to go in cycling shorts. Don't bother with undies. Theywill rub you raw no matter what the guys say (anyway, what do guys know aboutwomen's cycling shorts unless their wives or girlfriends ride?). For spin classes, which tend to be about an hour, there is no need for all of the creams the guys aresuggesting. I've been riding for 6 years, over 5000 miles a year and have never useda cream. It is personal, but for spin class, the duration is short enough that youwon't need a chamois cream to prevent chafing. A good pair of shorts should do.Invest in a good pair of shorts. Looks for ones that have a "baseball cut" and noseams down the center. The more panels a short has, the better they will fit.Inexpensive shorts tend to be 6 panel and more expensive shorts tend to be 8 panel.I even own a 10 panel pair from Cannondale. With cycling shorts, YES!, moreexpensive often means better. A $50 pair of shorts will be better than a $25 pair.$75 will get you an even nicer pair. Go ahead an spend the money to get acomfortable pair. If you are only going to do spin class and no cycling, $50-60 isprobably the upper end of what you need to spend on a pair of shorts.
