CYCLE SHORTS : I have a female riding buddy that got a yeast infection after a longish ride and wants to know if buying cycle shorts will increase or decrease the chance of this happening again. Someone told her that it would make it more likely and she asked me. If she asked me something about components or frames I could help but I don't know much about this subject. Idont think the shorts make a difference as much as making sure whateveryou are wearing is clean (don't try to get away with the same shorts ontwo rides in a row). I have a pair of Terry women's shorts which Iwould highly recommend as the center strip of the padding is cottoninstead of chamois. Also - Terry makes a great women's seat whichhelps cut down on too much pressure in the wrong places.
CYCLE SHORTS : The key is to keep the area dry. Also synthetic underware are badbecause they increase heat and don't breath well. The stench synthetics emit when you sweat in them is quite abominable andit is due to bacteria who find a great breeding ground in suchconditions.. Ideally she should try to get something that absorbs well and breathswell. And if possible to change to dry clothes as soon as the ride is over. I know this does not answer your question directly. I don't use anyof what they call 'cycling clothes', so I don't know the answer tothat question. I wear regular roomy clothes and never synthetics. I'm rather susceptible to yeast infections, but so far I haven't seen any correlations with long rides. The above wisdom (keep area dry and breathing and no synthetics) was given to meby a gynecologist. Following it has helped a lot.
