COTTON SHORTS : i agree, the most important thing is to not have wrinkles under you.they will quickly become chafing points, especially as you movearound. my favorite shorts are some nashbar bibs i have with a plainchamois. the worst i had were a pair with one of those gel inserts(they were freebies when i bought my lemond). it seems to work thesame way with seats. i tried a selle italia with the gel padding anddidn't care for it, the standard flite worked a lot better for me. thesame goes for those seats with slots in them. all they seem to do ischafe me in the wrong places. sometimes it seems simpler is better. smokey strodtmanI have a different opinion from most cyclists. I wear light cottonshorts, the kind you buy at Kmart for $7 and have moderate padding inthe saddle.I spend a lot of time in the saddle. I do ultra-marathon cycling. That is, 100 miles is a short ride for me. A half dozen times a yearI will do an event that will require me to ride for 24 hours or more.

COTTON SHORTS : I have seen numerous runners wearing cotton shorts over their spandexshorts. Why?I think the theory is that the spandex is supportive (your muscles don'tjiggle around, thus taking up energy) but some people don't feel comfortablebeing covered only in spandex.(Oddly enough, the only guys I see wearing these seem like they'd look justfine in spandex. Maybe it's the "I am not gay" thing afterall.)I sometimes where spandex underneath for support of tweaked muscles. Whilethey are functional in this way, I think they look disgusting on anyone, noexceptions. I cover them.Bob,Do we only have sex with the lights out and the sheets pulled over our heads? Rhetorical. Quite frankly, I look damn good in spandex and I find both men and women look great also. No offense Doug, but I'd much rather get stuck on a singletrack behind awoman in spandex than you or some other guy in spandex :-) It's the bestway I know to go out slow! You broke my heart. Is Dr. K out on bail, I can't face life. :)

COTTON SHORTS : For me, it's pockets. On shorter runs, it's off with the shorts!-----------------I think somebody else might have answered this;not sure. But this is a fairly common practice,I do it myself... It's mostly men who do this.Alot of people are not "comfortable" wearingonly spandex for a variety of reasons. Somepeople think spandex or lycra bike shortsare just goofy looking and so they are embarrasedabout that... Other men find it embarrasingto wear lycra because... well... a ceartain bodypart leaves a conspicuous bulge in the tightpants which is quite obvious. Usually a long lengthT-shirt covers that bulge in the pants, but somepeople like to wear an extra pair of shorts (be ita bathing suit or cotton pants or cut-off sweatpantsover the lycra/spandex.)What I like to do is fold the legs of my spandexshorts up, and then slip my bathing suit (I'mtoo cheap to afford a real pair of running shorts)over the spandex.. Since I fold the spandex legsup, you can't see them...I can only speak for myself, but running in just spandex shorts would be likeshowing up at a pool party in a speedo. Wrong time, wrong place. I haveoccasionally done it when doing a back to back swim/run workouts, but I feltuncomfortable. Call me old fashioned, I guess.

COTTON SHORTS : Whats with all this hi-tech running tops & shorts, i.e. coolmax, Dryflo &climalite to name a few. Has anybody tried them out...those in the realworld & not the promoters?! If so, were they any good & why. I would beinterested in your comments before I part with my hard earned cash! The last time I endorsed a product even as a joke, my post was attacked bysomeone that went by the name SpamHater, so I'm a little nervous now.I have one of those shirts by Nike, I can't find the type on the shirtanywhere on the shirt, but it does keep me noticeably cooler than a standardcotton shirt and it also seems to stay lighter because it doesn't soak up somuch sweat. As for some special socks I tried, well since they were so thick I didn'tlike them, I bought my everyday running shoes on sale and since they are asize smaller than I normally wear, I have to wear thin socks with them.Sure, I wear it all and I love it all, no kidding. I like Coolmax somuch that I wear cool max briefs all year long, running and notrunning. No kidding. I don't know why technology gets such a bad rapin things like this. The newer fabrics wick your perspiration away andkeep you more comfortable - what could be bad about that?

COTTON SHORTS : I'll run in cotton in the Spring and Fall when it's a little cooleroutside but in the summer, it's high-tech fabrics all the way for me,and in the winter they're especially important because they help keep medry and warm. I've worn a layer of Coolmax under a layer of cotton incool weather and that works well enough, too.The only bad thing about the high-tech fabrics is that they tend tostink if you don't get them into the washing machine right after youtake them off. The solution is to use anti-bacterial dishwashing soapon them, either in the machine or in the case of a really bad funk, as asoaking solution for a while before you wash them normally. For somefolks, the odor is really a problem, but I find it only happens if Itake off a high-tech fabric shirt and let it sit around in the warmweather for a day before washing it.There are also ways to find the high-tech stuff for less thanmega-dollars. E.g., cycling jerseys usually go for $50-$75 but you canfind them on several web sites for $25, made out of exactly the samematerial as the pricier items. I *love* to run in cycling jerseys -loads of very secure pockets in the back. I don't own any short-sleevehigh-tech running shirts - I use singlets when it's hot and cyclingjerseys in place of short-sleeve shirts. In fact, sells a short-sleeve cycling jersey that'sjust a singlet with three pockets in the back - I wear that regularly, too.
