CLOTHING SHORTS : I find it *more* comfortable to have "natural" temperatures: the house gets stuffy when we don't have fresh air coming in directly, and I *like* changes in temperature. I don't want to feel like I live in a box, but that I live in the real, natural world, where the seasons change. I consider it not only grossly wasteful but unhealthy to try to keep an artificially regulated constant temperature all year round. That's not the world we live in - our bodies are made to be reasonably comfortable at a range of temperatures, and while I certainly appreciate (and use) both heat and AC to regulate the two extremes to be more comfortable, I think it's absurd when I see people who dress in shorts and t-shirts all year round... in an area where it actually snows, not California! As for actual settings... I don't just "set it and forget it," but adjust based on how I feel. On a hot, dry day I'm comfortable with a higher temperature than on a hot, muggy day. I'll say, maybe around 76-78 F in the summer, 65-68 in the winter.
CLOTHING SHORTS : Written homework for PE classes??? Where do they come up with this stuff??? I *never* had PE homework...I don't think they could have assigned anything that i actually would have done. But then again, my last memory of high school was the high injury count I got in Freshman PE and the fact that, while 2 classes were required, I only had to take one because they thought i had asthma.....I did make it up when I took early enrollment in the community college (self-defense for women wasn't as strenuous). If you are a mamber of a wholesale club (like BJs or Sam's), you can get a fairly good price on white tube or athletic socks. That is where I get DSs, DHs, and my white socks. Don't ask, but I only where white athletic socks (when I can get my feet into shoes that need them), DH wears black socks to work and white tube socks when working in the yard, and DS wears whatever he grabs out of his drawer....sometimes his socks actually match his clothes (which makes me laugh). CLOTHING SHORTS : I never put any kind of lotion on the chamois and I never feel like I neededto. I think the lotion softens the skin so it may damage easier. My lotion recommendation was based on testimony of female racers that I haveknown. As I stated, everyone should decide what is best for them. By the way, I recall that Paul Kimmage, in his book, stated that he usedlotion for the Tour de France. You tell the other people in your little Spin class over at Ballys that theofficial consensus on RBR, the chief newsgroup to all pro cyclists worldwide andinter-galactic, is that you wear your bibs bareback. Now if you're a dirty girl, then just make sure you wash them after every ride(handwash, and line dry).If your friends in your little spin class still laugh at you, then tell them toshow up at the starting line of a bike race wearing their Hanes underneath theirKMart shorts and see how many laps they finish."Cafe de Colombia Latte" wrote in message... Define "dirty girl" CLOTHING SHORTS : " I have a question about clothing choices while riding- What do you wear underyour cycling shorts? The other people inmy spinning class say to go without, but that seems kind of gross. I'm thinking oneof the long short liners they sell down at the bike shop would be the way to go.Does anyone have any thoughts or other suggestions?"Au naturale is the only way to go in cycling shorts. Don't bother with undies. Theywill rub you raw no matter what the guys say (anyway, what do guys know aboutwomen's cycling shorts unless their wives or girlfriends ride?). For spin classes, which tend to be about an hour, there is no need for all of the creams the guys aresuggesting. I've been riding for 6 years, over 5000 miles a year and have never useda cream. It is personal, but for spin class, the duration is short enough that youwon't need a chamois cream to prevent chafing. A good pair of shorts should do.Invest in a good pair of shorts. Looks for ones that have a "baseball cut" and noseams down the center. The more panels a short has, the better they will fit.Inexpensive shorts tend to be 6 panel and more expensive shorts tend to be 8 panel.I even own a 10 panel pair from Cannondale. With cycling shorts, YES!, moreexpensive often means better. A $50 pair of shorts will be better than a $25 pair.$75 will get you an even nicer pair. Go ahead an spend the money to get acomfortable pair. If you are only going to do spin class and no cycling, $50-60 isprobably the upper end of what you need to spend on a pair of shorts. CLOTHING SHORTS : Several clothing companies make shortssspecfically for spinning. The chamois tendsto be a little smaller and a little thinner, and the shorts tend to be shorter thanyou would normally wear when cycling. I would NOT wear spinning shorts while ridingeither my road or mountain bike. The chamois is too thin, and you might get verysore. Look at , , and for some ideas on women's cycling shorts. I suggest youtry to buy your shorts from your local bike shop as you can try them on and find outwhich ones are more comfortable. These websites will give you a start, though. Don'tbuy your shorts at Mega-Sport R Us (tm), do yourself a favor and get them at thebike shop.Try to get a short that has wicking properties. It will transport the moisture awayfrom your skin to keep you drier and cooler during spin class. Never buy cottonshorts. Cotton holds moisture and can lead to such non-fun things as yeastinfections and other yuckies. If you are interested in discussing women's specific issues, join the women'scycling list.
