BIKING SHORTS : Based on all the chafing complaints I have heard, the idea soundsgood, but not wanting to look like a sissy either, I'll take thechafing.Spandex is ok as long as you're on a bike or on a football field(provided that you have a nice firm butt).Other than that, you might as well be the lead singer of guns andRoses...Oh, all I see turns to brownAs the sun burns the groundAnd my eyes fill with sandAs I scan this wasted landI have and they worked fine. I don't use them an longer simply becausethe hiking I do involves a lot of scrambling and bushwacking and I'veswitched to long pants. Bare legs in that sort of terrain tend to getscratched up a lot.Wearing biking shorts for hiking makes no sense at all for a couple of verysimple reasons:1. Biking shorts were designed to cushion the seat, absorb moisture from theseat area, wick it away, and prevent body parts from buffing. That samecushioning would cause chafing while hiking and prevent air circulation, thereby generating heat.

BIKING SHORTS : I've been washing, by machine, my lycra biking shorts in cold water in Cheerfor some time now. I would like to know if there is a more recommendablelaundry detergent and perhaps an additive that might be most effective forwashing and purifying that chamois area. Thanks. I always change into a loosepair of shorts immediately after a ride and put the shorts inside out in thesun for awhile to destroy any of that bad bacteria. I always hand wash mine in the bathroom sink with Woolite immediately afterriding. I never tried leaving them out in the sun. I haven't had a saddlesore yet (knock on wood).I wash mine in the washer witht he dark clothes. If those bugs can survive 20minutes in a washing machine filled with Tide with bleach, they have my respect.I also turn mine inside out and leave them in the sun if I need to use themagain before I can wash them. I assume it kills the bacteria since I don't havegangrene yet.--_________________________Chris Phillipo - Ride our island. > I've been washing, by machine, my lycra biking shorts in cold water in Cheer> for some time now. BIKING SHORTS : It sounds like you're doing the "normal" thing with regard to washingshorts. The only thing I might add is that between skinsuits(2pair) andshorts(4pair) I only wear shorts once before I wash them. This isprobably overkill, but it's easy to toss a pair on the wash pile, andafter a couple of problems (years ago) with saddle sores, I found it canbe a "life" saver. This has the added benefit of stockpiling shortswhen you find a fit/chamois that you like! I had an old pair of PIshorts that I loved, but by the time they wore out, PI had changed thechamois material, and the new ones sucked--I wish I'd bought a couple ofpair of the old ones! It sounds expensive, but it can be cheaper in thelong run, especially if you find a short you like on sale. I've addedthe shorts here and there, so in any given season, one (or two) pairwill wear out and I'll buy a new pair. It's really not so expensive. Of course I also ride a lot of miles, if you're more recreational, youmay not ride enough to warrent 6 pairs of shorts, but even a couple pairis better than just one. You can hang the damp pair to dry and use adifferent short every other day to make sure the chamois is really dry.

BIKING SHORTS : A side note, not so much for chamois/shorts but for polypro/synthetictops: I recently bought some Arm & Hammer laundry detergent (actuallycheaper than most brands) to wash cloth diapers at home. It did such agreat job at de-odorizing diapers/clothes, that I tried it on some of myold polypro shirts and found that, while not completely odor free, thatold "poly-odor" they'd developed was significantly reduced. ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------Arno Granados (304)456-2214 I usually take the shorts into the shower with me right after the ride and washthem with the same Dial antibacterial soap I use. Rinse well, in the shower, and then squeeze out extra moisture by rolling up tight in towel, and hang todry.I do the same thing almost, Carol. I wear them once and then trample them inthe shower stall after the ride, while I use normal shampoo and soap. Rinseunder clean water and hang to dry (heated bathroom floors are common where Ilive). Don't wring or you risk ripping the seams. They're ready to use in 24hrs. In the long run this is kinder to the material and I don't use 27 galsof water or whatever it is plus detergent in a machine. No problems (thoughI do use a recembent most of the time now).

I wash all my bikeclothes after one wearing, in the machine with laundry detergent and borax.I get zero residual odor on shorts, jerseys, jackets, etc., polyester, polypro or coolmax, whatever. I also managed to 'de-stink' a jacket that Ihad worn lots before developing this regimen (the odor had really 'set').Life's too short for hand washing.I'm curious. What is the average lifespan of a pair of cycling shorts? The pair I just bought are fairly clear in the instructions that machinewashing is verbotten. (Also, as the washing machine just packed it in,there is an incentive to handwash them.) --G-- Gordon Dewis | Tired of using "military intelligence" as anexample BA Hons Geography | of an oxymoron?
