If I have to be in the saddle for longer, I'll thinkabout bike clothes. If it's a longer errand-- 4 or 6 miles up to maybe 10or a dozen--the bike shorts go on underneath shorts or normal trousers.(these must have no big seams in the crotch, as those really really hurtafter a while). Longer jaunts into the country merit the bike shorts alone;no snags, no chafing, no worries.In the cooler weather, I'd ride in bike shorts under plain casual slacks,with a woolen sweater. It's not so much the fit of the shorts -- lycra stretches an awfullot -- but the fit of the pad. And you can't really tell how comfy thatis until you've ridden on it a bit. The catalogs generally tell you whatsize to order based on your measurements and show pictures of the pads. Conventional wisdom here suggests you not buy shorts with a center seam onthe pad.

I don't like the extremely lightweight ones, though, the paddingis equally flimsy. Just think, some guy or gal ridingon a bike wearing one of those bike shorts sweating, secreting, butt rubbing upthe chamois. Yeccccch! Those chamois are a home to bacteria and dingleberriesand clitty litter. There is nothing is the world that could convince me thatthese is one sure way to clean those things thorougly after you buy them.
