BICYCLE SHORTS : A few years ago, I decided to try using underwear again under my shorts, having ridden 'briefless' for several years. Probably just out of laziness, certainly not out of any sense of modesty! Yeah, I'm lazy. Anyway, I was riding along for 50 miles or so, and the saddle sores kept slowly getting worse. Here I was riding on a section of road that I'm usually flying on, and I couldn't because it hurt! For some reason, it didn't occur to me in 50 miles that the underwear might be the culprit - yeah, I'm dense, too.So finally it does (occur to me), and I pull over in a pine grove, and get myself pretty much concealed from the highway (hey, I didn't want to cause accidents from poor drivers gettin' a glimpse of my pale white butt!). I manage to get my shorts and my other shorts off, but not without falling over (add clumsy to the list). Once back on the road (with white fruit-of-the-looms peeking out of my back jersey pocket), I am AMAZED. The pain is completely gone, and I start to fly faster than ever. The sensation is fantastic. Now I understand why people bang their heads on the wall (it feels SO good when they stop).

BICYCLE SHORTS : During cold weather, wear pantyhose. They kept the legs warm by themselves and where expecially helpful under those old scratchy wool leggings. I never tried this without the leggings, thank goodness for today's Lycra.Shaving legs greatly helps cleaning up after road rash. (It also looks better under the Panty-hose 8-). When drafting, never overlap the wheel in front or you will be ridding alone.A soft seat will put pressure on places that shouldn't have pressure. Use a hard seat for long rides.A helmet keeps the brain cells intact when you crash, and you will crash.(I had four crashed in four years and even damaged one of the early Bell helmets).In cold weather, start the ride with a piece of newspaper under your jersey.The newspaper can be discarded when you get warmed-up.GT>>GT>loth >> privates. BICYCLE SHORTS : I think the world is becoming a very strange place when one needs/considers Bicycle shorts as "camouflage gear". I have been watching thisthread and an other talking about the supposed advantages of Lycra orSpandex for some time. What seems to be happening is that people aremixing apples and oranges. There may be some advantage to wearingspandex or other tight fitting gear if you are a wedgie rider, and theinternal pad could offer some protection if a rider slips and comes downon the cross bar- OUCH! I suppose there is also some airflow advantagesover the smooth surface of the material.On a recumbent you have a whole different dynamic at work. We bike feetfirst and have a minimal front profile to the wind compared to that of awedgie rider. If you add a fairring on the bike, the spandex might evenhave less total effect.This is a personal observation, but I would think that the hot moistenvironment created by Bicycle shorts may actually be hazardous to along distance recumbent rider, the more intimate areas of the human bodydoes not take kindly to this humid environment and may react with somerather nasty rashes or other problems. ( Ladies-- You can explain the"tight jeans" syndrome to the guys )
