BOARD SHORTS : Ever stain your laundry by accidently washing a bar of wax? Arrrgh!birwelss and katins are both good....finding em is hard for me.....texas hasmostly "trendy" surf wear...My first trip to the Wedge was the summer of 1964. I drove up thereand realized I didn't have any trunks. I had to buy a pair of BirdieBirdwell Beach Britches. I still have them, they are still in goodshape, and someday, when I lose some weight, I'll wear them again. ps, I also hang onto some of my favorite old T-shirts. One of themhas a picture of a 1950's babe paddling a longboard and the text:'Fuck Art! Let's Surf!' I got it while I was in art school.Get a color you really like, 'cause the things do last forever. I still havethe Birdies I had in high school. As I was waaaay out of shape then, theyare 36s. When they fit again, I'm in big trouble.On the other hand.....that doesn't seem like the right term ,doesit?.......I have a pair of 29s that worked for one summer. Just keep themaround for nostalgia value.
BOARD SHORTS : Agree about thr Birdwells I crashed a motercycle into a brick wall wearing onlymy birdies needed 25 stitches and not one scratch on them. Like the way theystand in the corner by themselves when they are newLCJust wondering, I'm getting a pair of board shorts for a cruise (neverworn them before), and since there's no lining like a swimsuit, areyou supposed to wear boxers underneath them or not?nah bro.... freeball it...the cloth is like a tarp so you wont show through...although i do, livin in san diego... we have way too much eyecandy aroundhere..has a serious effect on the "bulge" factorguess we need more cold water around here.I have seen some of the newer board shorts advertised with a no velcro fly. I am told the fly stays closed because of a lycra strip sewn behind it. I can't picture how this would keep the fly shut. I can't go to a shop to investigate as here in CT all the stores have winter apparel at this time (they forget that some of us can hop a plane and go to warm weather). I don't want to purchase a pair without understanding how these shorts maintain modesty as one romps around the beach. Can anyone help describe this new innovation. (there is no help at the manufacturers' web sites - only an indication that the shorts have the no velcro fly). Thanks in advance.

BOARD SHORTS : i think that the difference lies in two areas. the first is the style, swim trunks are usuall shorter than board shorts in the legs. board shorts need to be long here to protect the hair on our legs from being ripped out by the wax, somthing girl surfers don't have a problem wih i gues because they can surf in bikinis. the second is in the construction, board shorts are made heavier duty so that the wax does not rip them apart (which has happened to a pair of my swim trunks), they also have a wax pocket that drains fasy and the good ones come with a string for your keys. lastly board shorts don't come with a underwear liner because going freeball is the best way to go.I think, in a nutshell (no pun), that board shorts are simplyroomier and more comfortable. They're cut longer in the leg andjust fit better when you are sitting on the board. Most comewith the aforementioned wax pocket with drain holes to let thewater out. I live in Massachusetts and wear a wet suit for a good part of the year. I surfed in Florida last September inboard shorts and a lycra rash guard to keep my upper body fromgetting burned in the sun. It was real joy to surf in warm water with a warm breeze in the air. I had the time of my life.

MostThere has been some talk in the "I've had it" thread aboutSPF shirts. Could users of those comment on them a bit more?Is it actually equivalent to SPF 25 sunscreen? You can also locate a local dealer there. I could not findthe shirts locally, and ended up just calling them and ordering direct. I'd stay away from white, I had another brand white shirt and it turnedgreen. The folks at Mysterioso took the time and paid the money to actuallyhave the fabics rated for SPF.
